Fair Weather

Hedge10062017Did you enjoy RJ as the victim this week? I’m sure you did. We all grieve for Verne. Even me. But don’t get used to it. We can occasionally twiddle the creative knobs, but we can’t flip a switch and upend the strip.

We all wanted Charlie Brown to kick Lucy in the head instead of the football. But he never did. Ever. Why? Because he would stop being Charlie Brown. And then the universe would end. And it WOULD ALL BE YOUR FAULT YOU SENSITIVE SNOWFLAKE YOU!

So, I expect a cow to fall on Verne very soon.

For sake of the universe.

Frost in Space

oh161119NASA should look into our squirrel assist launch vehicle. Works for peanuts. And Twinkies.

Snap, Crackle, Ack!

oh160903Don’t worry, Verne isn’t going to really change. He can’t. It’s a comics rule that characters do not develop. They do not grow. They do not arc. See Peanuts. See Calvin & Hobbes. You want your losers to stay losers. You want your scoundrel to keep on scoundrel-ing. And you want your Hammy to keep on hugging.

Sorry Verne. Them’s the rules.

oh160624With apologies to Sparky. He wasn’t a cartoonist. He was an artist.

Charlie Brown is Contagious

Over the Hedge - oh151213comb_ht.tif

Over the Hedge

Verne isn’t really Charlie Brown. His head isn’t nearly as round as Charlie Brown’s. And he’d much too fashion forward to wearing a zig-zag shirt. And, you know, he’s a turtle.

oh151205This isn’t exactly fair use, but I don’t think anyone will mind.

Verne’s Tardis

We’ve used the Verne’s-shell-is-bigger-on-the-inside-than-on-the-outside-thing-sparingly-over the years.  It’s a well worn visual gag – from Dr. Who’s Tardis to Snoopy’s Dog House to many Looney Tunes cartoons.

It’s funny, which is why it persists.  But it’s easy.

Having said that, I do wonder what wonders Verne has in that shell.  Generally, this joke is down off-screen in the reader/viewers imagination.  But what if went inside and showed you?

I’m not sure it’s worthwhile.  Maybe it needs a twist.

What do you think?
