It’s Science

oh160125No, I don’t know why you’d want to take the derivative of an integer. Presumably T copied and pasted this off the web (given the typeset of the figures).  I don’t have all the answers. Just most of them.

Mars Feeds Matt

oh151019 Haven’t seen The Martian yet. But I did read the book. It was excellent, if a bit skimpy on the psychological toll of getting stranded on Mars. What I liked most about it was its cheerleading of science. Everything Matt does to get off Mars is rooted in real science.

Good stuff. Mike-Bob says check it out.

The Mall of Mars

I have a suggestion for the next Mars mission with a rover. How about adding one of those remote control tiny helicopters with a camera? Of course you’d have to soup it up and modify it for the Martian atmosphere.  But with a helicopter eye-in-the-sky you could get some amazing video and hugely increase the range of the rover. Yeah, there’s probably not much scientific value, but the PR value would be huge.

Right now we’re getting HD pictures of a hill.  A hill that looks a lot like a zillion desert hills I grew up around near El Paso.  You land a helicopter near that Mars canyon that could swallow a few Grand Canyons and now we’re talking prime time TV fly-by sponsored by Nike.  NASA’s budget increases by leaps and bounds and before you know it rich folks are paying big money to remotely fly on Mars.

Oh, wait. NASA already thought of this.

Never mind.

May the 24th Be With You

A space sling shot isn’t as stupid as it appears.  Make it big enough, pull it back far enough and you create a substantial amount of kinetic energy that in the vacuum of space has a near infinite maximum effective range.  Remember, a gravity sling shot an asteroid only 10km in diameter that may have wiped out the dinosaurs.
